Spotlight Stories: Anastasia Nesterova, FASP Class of '14

In 2014, Anastasia graduated from the French American School of Princeton (FASP) with a passion for analytics and problem solving. Her dynamic career as a data scientist today began within our halls and serve as a backdrop to her inspiring story.

Can you tell us a little about yourself, where are you now?

Hello! My name is Anastasia Nesterova. I am currently based in Paris, France, working as data scientist at a big consulting firm, entirely in French. My educational path has taken me from the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey to Georgetown University in Washington D.C., and now to a joint Master of Science in Data Science for Business from École Polytechnique and HEC Paris. My family immigrated from Russia before I was born, and thanks to my education, I am now fluent in English, Russian, and French.

What was the inspiration to go into Data Science and did any of the experiences at FASP help nurture that interest?

My inspiration to pursue data science was sparked by a deep-seated passion for problem-solving, a trait that began to blossom at FASP. One vivid memory is teaching my friends how to solve the Rubik's Cube when we were just 10 years old. This early fascination with complex puzzles naturally evolved into a love for data science and software engineering. The comprehensive education I received at FASP, with rigorous coursework in both math and social studies in French and English, nurtured this interest and provided a strong foundation.

How has attending FASP impacted you personally and academically?

FASP had a significant impact on my personal and academic growth. The bilingual education not only made me fluent in French and English but also gave me a deep cultural understanding of both France and the USA. This well-rounded education has impressed many of my French colleagues, especially considering I do not have any French family background. Academically, the skills I developed at FASP, such as analytical thinking and adaptability, have been crucial throughout my journey from Lawrenceville to Georgetown and now in my master's program.

How do you see a bilingual, multicultural education showing up in your life today?

The bilingual and multicultural education from FASP is evident in my everyday life and professional career. My proficiency in multiple languages has been an asset in my internships and roles in data science and software engineering across different countries. This capability has allowed me to effectively collaborate with international teams and approach projects with a global perspective. Working in data science consulting entirely in French, despite growing up speaking French only because of FASP, showcases the profound impact of this bilingual education. Personally, this education has enriched my understanding and appreciation of different cultures, enhancing my interactions and communication skills.

What is your most vivid memory of FASP?

One of my most vivid memories of FASP is the excitement of the annual science fair. Developing my project, presenting my findings, and the encouragement from teachers and peers left a lasting impression. This experience reinforced my love for scientific inquiry and problem-solving, key elements that have inspired me to study Chemistry, Physics and Calculus in High School, and later driven my career in data science.

What words of wisdom can you impart on current students of FASP?

To the current students of FASP, I would say: take full advantage of the unique opportunities a bilingual and multicultural education provides. Embrace curiosity and always be eager to explore new subjects, whether it's math, science, languages, or arts. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek help when you need it—learning is a collaborative journey. Practice problem-solving in fun ways, like with puzzles or games, to develop your critical thinking skills. Stay open-minded and appreciate the diverse cultures and perspectives around you, as they will enrich your understanding of the world. Most importantly, enjoy your time at FASP, make friends, and cherish the experiences!
